$1,188. That is what a 9.9% paywall fee takes from $12,000 in sales, and it is the smallest number you will pay. Add the per-sale fee, the plan that unlocks the paywall, card processing, and DRM, and the bill reaches $2,502 to $3,726.

$1,188. That's what a 9.9% paywall fee takes from a $12,000recital season. It's also the smallest number you'll pay.

Add the per-sale fee, the plan that unlocks the paywall, and card processing. The bill lands at $2,502. That's 20.9%. Need DRM too? It's closer to 31%.

Why Is the Headline Fee Never the Real Fee?

Pricing pages are written to be skimmed. They lead with one friendly percentage. The rest sits a click away, or in a different row, or behind a plan upgrade.

None of it is hidden, exactly. It's just spread out. So nobody adds it up until the first statement arrives.

Four things stack on top of a paywall percentage:

  • A per-sale fee. A flat $0.40 or $0.50 on every purchase.
  • The plan that unlocks it. The paywall often needs a paid tier.
  • Card processing. Roughly 2.9% plus $0.30 in the US.
  • Add-ons you need. DRM and TV apps are common ones.

How Does 9.9% Turn Into 21%?

We'll use Dacast because its numbers are public. We broke down its pricing in our Dacast vs MediaZilla comparison. The year is the same as always: 300 families buy a $40 film.

Bar chart showing a 9.9% paywall fee rising to 10.9% with per-sale fees, 17.2% with the plan, 20.9% with card processing and 31.1% on a DRM plan, versus MediaZilla at 7.3%
Each line is small. Together they triple the number on the pricing page.

Step 1. The Headline: $1,188

9.9% of $12,000. This is the number everybody quotes.

Step 2. The Per-Sale Fee: +$120

Dacast also takes $0.40per purchase. On 300 sales that's $120. Running total: $1,308.

Step 3. The Plan: +$756

The paywall is included on the Event plan at $63/mo billed annually. That's $756 a year. Running total: $2,064, or 17.2%.

Step 4. Card Processing: +$438

Stripe-style processing is 2.9% plus $0.30 per US card payment. That's $438on 300 sales. If a platform bundles it, it's still real money. It's just inside the fee. Running total: $2,502, or 20.9%.

Step 5. DRM: +$1,224

Dacast lists on-demand DRM only on the Scale plan at $165/mo. That's $1,980 a year, replacing the $756 Event plan. Total: $3,726, or 31.1%. If protecting your film matters, this is your real number.

Where Does One $40 Sale Actually Go?

Percentages are abstract. One sale isn't. Take a single $40 film.

Stacked bars showing a single $40 sale: on a paywall platform you keep $31.66 after a $4.36 fee, $2.52 plan share and $1.46 processing, on MediaZilla you keep $37.08
One $40 sale at 300 sales a year. The plan cost is spread across every sale.

On the paywall platform you pay $4.36 in fees (9.9% is $3.96, plus $0.40). Your share of the plan is $2.52. Processing is $1.46. You keep $31.66.

On MediaZilla the plan share is $1.46, processing is the same $1.46, and the fee line is empty. You keep $37.08. That's $5.42 more per sale.

What Do Other Paywalls Really Cost?

Dacast isn't the outlier. Run the same year through other common setups.

$12,000 in sales (300 × $40)Fees + plan + processingShare of salesYou keep
Dacast Event (paywall)$2,50220.9%$9,498
Uscreen Starter (10% on one-time sales)$2,22618.6%$9,774
Gumroad direct (10% + $0.50)$1,78814.9%$10,212
MediaZilla (0% commission)$8767.3%$11,124
Published or widely reported pricing as of October 2026, annual billing, US cards, $438 in Stripe processing on every row. DRM is not included on the Dacast Event or Uscreen Starter rows.

Uscreen's Starter plan reportedly takes 10% on one-time sales plus $49/mo. That's $1,200 plus $588 plus $438 in processing: $2,226.

Gumroad lists 10% plus $0.50 per direct sale. That's $1,350 plus $438. We covered it in how to set up Stripe checkout with 0% platform commission.

How Do You Calculate Your Own True Rate?

Takes five minutes. Do it before you sign anything.

  1. Count your sales.Use last year's real number, not a hopeful one.
  2. Multiply the percentage. Percentage fee × total sales.
  3. Multiply the flat fee. Per-sale fee × number of sales.
  4. Add 12 months of the plan. Use the plan that includes every feature you need.
  5. Add processing. About 2.9% + $0.30 per US card sale.

Divide the total by your sales. That's your true percentage. If it beats the headline by more than a few points, ask why before you pay it.

When Is a Commission Fine?

Commissions aren't evil. They fit some businesses:

  • You sell under $1,000 a year. A subscription can cost more than the commission.
  • You want a marketplace to bring buyers. Discovery is worth a cut.
  • You don't need DRM, TV apps, or lifetime buyer access.

But if your buyers already know you, because you filmed their dancer or their wedding, a marketplace adds nothing. You're renting an audience you own.

Stop trusting the headline. Start adding the lines. Start your MediaZilla account and run your next season at 0% platform commission.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paywall Fees

What is the real cost of a 9.9% paywall fee?
It depends on what you add to it. On 300 sales at $40 ($12,000), a 9.9% fee is $1,188. Add $0.40 per sale and it's $1,308 (10.9%). Add the $63 per month plan that unlocks the paywall and it's $2,064 (17.2%). Add card processing and it's $2,502 (20.9%). On a plan that includes DRM, the total reaches about $3,726 (31.1%).
Why isn't the percentage on the pricing page the whole cost?
Because the percentage is only one line. Per-transaction fees, the monthly plan that unlocks the feature, card processing, and add-ons like DRM all sit outside it. Each is small on its own. Together on $12,000 in sales they can triple the headline number.
Does the monthly plan cost count as a paywall fee?
Yes, when the plan is required to use the paywall. On Dacast the paywall is an add-on on Starter and included on Event at $63 per month billed annually. That's $756 a year you wouldn't pay if you only needed hosting.
Is card processing separate from the paywall fee?
On most platforms, yes. Stripe's US rate is 2.9% plus $0.30 per successful card payment, which comes to $438 on 300 sales at $40. If a platform bundles processing into its fee, confirm that in writing. Check the line items on a test sale before you launch.
What does a $0.40 per-sale fee add up to?
On 300 sales it's $120. That sounds small. On a $10 rental the same $0.40 is a 4% fee on top of the percentage, so cheaper prices feel the per-sale fee much more than a $40 film does.
How does MediaZilla compare on the same $12,000?
MediaZilla charges 0% platform commission and a flat $438 per year, with DRM included. Add $438 of Stripe processing and the total is $876, or 7.3% of sales. You keep $11,124.
How do I calculate my own true paywall cost?
Write down five numbers: percentage fee, per-sale fee, monthly plan price, processing rate, and any add-on you need (DRM, TV apps). Multiply by your real sales count for one year. Add them up and divide by total sales. That's your true percentage.
Should I avoid every platform that charges a commission?
No. Under roughly $1,000 a year in sales, a commission can cost less than any subscription. The math flips as volume grows, because a commission scales with your sales and a flat plan doesn't.
